I have strong opinions about sprinkles.

Not important opinions. I don't need anyone else to agree with them. But if I'm standing in front of a donut case, I am absolutely looking for the one with the most sprinkles.

Not a tasteful scattering.

Coverage.

There should be enough that some fall onto the paper when you pick up the donut.

I like the crunch they add to soft, chewy fried dough. I like the ridiculous colors. I like that they serve almost no practical purpose whatsoever.

They're just there to make a donut happier.

Sometimes when I'm ordering, the person behind the counter will ask, “Anything else?”

“Yes. More sprinkles.”

I am only partly joking.

There are plenty of things in life that benefit from restraint. Sprinkle application is not one of them.

Perhaps that's why I like them so much. Most of our days are full of sensible decisions. Things we need to buy. Things we need to fix. Things that need answering, cleaning, paying or putting away.

Nobody needs sprinkles.

They don't make breakfast more nutritious. They don't make the donut more sophisticated. I'm fairly certain nobody has ever looked at a chocolate sprinkle donut and admired its restraint.

Good.

Some things are allowed to exist simply because they make us happy.

For me, apparently, it's tiny pieces of brightly colored sugar stuck to chocolate frosting.

The more the better.

More soon.
